Jason Witten Leads Argyle Liberty Christian to Semi Finals
It’s safe to say that Dallas Cowboys legendary tight end Jason Witten knows or thing or two about football. At the start of this season, we reported on the 17-year tight end preparing for his third season as head coach at Argyle Liberty Christian.
In his first year at the helm, the squad only managed to win a pair of games. Last year, the team improved to 10 victories. Now, Liberty Christian is averaging 46 points per game behind wide receivers Brady Janusek and Quinton Brown’s combined 21 touchdowns, as well as junior running back (and UTSA potential commit) Chase Garnett’s 22 rushing scores. The offense peaked with a 85-13 victory over Fort Worth Christian, reaching the 12-0 marker for the first wins in a season since 2007.
Despite a potent offense, it’s the defense that continues to be the driving force for the Warriors, led by coach’s sons junior linebacker CJ Witten (64 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, five sacks) and freshman defensive back Cooper Witten (53 total tackles, two interceptions, two forced fumbles). The unit is allowing less than six points per game and have posted five shutouts. The team has given up more than two scores just once all season. Originally, like his sons, Jason competed as a defensive end while playing in high school at Tennessee.
Witten follows in a family legacy of high school head coaches. His grandfather Rider won 246 games in both Virginia and Tennessee. His younger brother Shawn had 163 career wins and two state titles with his alma mater at Elizabethton. His eldest brother Ryan even coaches of the Milligan University women’s flag football team.
Currently, Argyle Liberty Christian is poised to take on All Saints in the TAPPS Division II semi-finals. They haven’t won a state title since 2007.
