The Johnson Jaguars proved once again that defense wins big games. Coming off a 45-7 rout of Converse Judson, Johnson snagged four interceptions Friday night to shut down Pieper and pull away late for a 31-22 win at Heroes Stadium.
The Jaguars struck first with a 35-yard run from Rayshun Hurt, but Pieper answered right back with a long touchdown pass from Tyler LaCombe to Cash Lancaster. From there, Johnson’s defense began to take control. Key turnovers set up short fields, and Aaron Crawford-Webb punched in two touchdowns to give the Jaguars breathing room.
Cameron McDuffie’s late interception sealed the deal after Pieper tried to mount a final comeback. Johnson quarterback Elvis Estrada chipped in 157 passing yards and a rushing score to balance the attack.
Johnson now sits at 2-0 heading into Week 3 against McAllen Memorial (1-1). Pieper drops to 1-1 and will try to bounce back when they host undefeated Davenport.
