There is one less unbeaten team in Texas today after the Northwest Texans pulled out their seventh win of the season in a 31-21 victory over Fort Worth Boswell Thursday night. Boswell threatened the Texans with a potential upset when they took a one possession lead in the second quarter, but Northwest quickly reclaimed and maintained the lead for the duration of the game.
The Texans have been widely celebrated for their offensive feats lead by junior quarterback, Prince Mavula. Thursday night’s win was no exception. While the Boswell defense held the Texans to only 57 rushing yards, Mavula’s passing game was on point. He completed 24 passes for 321 yards and two touchdowns plus a short two-yard run for the final Texan touchdown late in the third quarter. Gavin Holmes was the sole recipient of the touchdown passes. Mavula and Holmes connected seven times for 152 yards. Charles Cannon was 100% on PATs plus a field goal for the final Northwest points of the game.
Boswell turned the ball over five times including four interceptions and one fumble. The Northwest defense capitalized on the mistakes, most notably Caden McDonald’s 54-yard interception return for a Texan touch down just before halftime. Boswell quarterback Brayden Thomas completed 14 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Damon Williams, Breshun Berry, and Isaiah Mayfield all put points on the board with Pioneer touchdowns and Jackson Counts was three-for-three on PATs.
Boswell heads into next week’s rivalry game against Saginaw with a district record of 3-1. Meanwhile, the Texans continue to press on with a perfect record. This comes as a surprise to many since the team won only one game last season. Justin Northwest will continue their pursuit of the post-season against Chisolm Trail next Friday in Fort Worth.
