Lake Travis Separates From Martin In Second Half Offensive Frenzy
Despite a competitive first half, Lake Travis dominated Martin after the break, destroying the Warriors 52-12 at Cowtaw Stadium.
The Cavaliers opened regulation by charging 47 yards on 11 plays, culminating in running back Vann Hopping rushing for a yard to give his squad a 7-0 lead early.
Yet, Martin stood their ground, securing a 38-yard field goal followed by an onside kick that put the Warriors squarely on the Lake Travis 48. Martin capitalized on a slant to Brody Williams, who found the end zone 17-yards later.
The Cavaliers answered with a 19-yard touchdown run right up the middle and an interception that resulted in a field goal.
Warriors quarterback Brooks Brigance was injured before intermission after taking a big hit from Cavaliers defensive end Carter Buck. He managed to limp through the quarter, but was ruled ineligible for the rest of the game, allowing the Cavaliers to dominate 51-12 over the Warriors.
After halftime, without Brigance en tow, Martin punted on its first five possessions of the second half. In contrast, Lake Travis took advantage of the Warriors’ offensive woes, scoring five straight touchdowns.
Lacking a starting quarterback, Martin only put up 100 yards of total offense in the second half.
Hopping finished the contest rushing for 183 yards and five touchdowns; 157 yards came on his final five carries.
Next week, Lake Travis hosts their home opener against Rockwall; Martin will travel to Denton to face Denton Guyer.
