Lake Travis Facing Bullying Lawsuit
Student Athlete Family Suing Lake Travis Independent School District For Bullying
Lake Travis Independent School District might be in hot water. The mother of a student-athlete is suing the Austin district after she claims faculty failed to stop her son’s endless harassment. According to the 30-page lawsuit, filed in federal court on April 6, teammates stuffed the student athlete’s locker full of peanuts, fully aware of his allergy.
“Despite efforts to seek help from school authorities, LTISD was deliberately indifferent to the ongoing bullying, failing to intervene or provide accommodations, properly supervise students, and staff, or enforce disciplinary measures mandated by state law for students committing assault,” the lawsuit states.
Carter Mannon, the 16-year-old sophomore, was the youngest player on the Cavaliers varsity team. Reportedly, Mannon confessed his allergy when declining an invitation to Texas Roadhouse, a restaurant renowned for serving peanuts. A mere day after learning about Mannon’s severe allergy, two teammates—named “Student G and Student B” in the lawsuit—poured a can of peanuts in the sophomore’s locker and placed them in his uniform. The peanuts in his cleats and jerseys triggered an allergic reaction. The teenager rushed to the bathroom to wash his hands and avoided anaphylactic shock, but still endured hives on his arms for days.
The players were suspended for two football games, with the district later ruling that the incident didn’t meet the legal definition of bullying.
Without any help from the school district, Mannon transferred to another school. The family is currently in the process of selling their home and leaving the Lake Travis area.
