Tragedy fell on Little River.
While weightlifting at Academy High School, Little River eighth-grader Devon Hulsey was severely injured, losing his index and middle fingers after a 45-pound weight fell on his hand.
The tragedy, however, is being transformed into triumph.
Hulsey recently spoke on the incident, embracing the accident and using it as a platform to raise awareness.
“I am also extremely grateful it was me that it happened to instead of any of my fellow loved classmates,” the 14-year-old said in a press release. “This way it’ll bring the districts attention to the situation and they could easily prevent it from happening to anybody else.”
A GoFundMe account has been created for Hulsey to help with medical expenses and raise awareness about the dangers within weight rooms.
