Longtime Refugio Coach Jason Herring Hangs Up Whistle
After 17 seasons with Refugio, coach Jason Herring is stepping down from head coaching duties. He will remain the athletic director. A news release emailed last week from Refugio ISD Superintendent Melissa Gonzales cited “ongoing health concerns”.
Since 2007, coach Herring has been the Refugio play-caller, leading his team to three state title championship victories (2011, 2016, and 2019). The team was also runner-up in four other title games and appeared in two state semifinals and eight state quarterfinal games.
He leaves the program with a 224-23 record; his teams never won fewer than 11-games in a season. He also has the highest winning percentage of 90.6% in the school’s 93-year history.
Coach Herring originally started his career in Wall, coaching for two years. Next, he took over at Sonora, compiling an undefeated record and a state championship.
Longtime assistant Drew Cox will be promoted as the Refugio next head football coach.
In an interview we conducted with coach Herring last year, he credited the community for his coaching success.
“What’s happened here is this has become home,” coach Herring said. “The community has treated us right. It was just a perfect match for a coach and a community.”
