Los Fresnos Key Players and Storylines
From top to bottom, Los Fresnos did nothing but win last season. The Falcons finished undefeated in the regular season for the first time since 2008 and also won a playoff game for the second-straight year. Not only that but their JV and freshmen teams also won their respective district titles too.
Now, the focus turns to seeing what senior quarterback Evan McChesney can do with the keys to the offense. He’ll replace a four-year starter in what head coach David Cantu describes as a “quarterback driven offense.”
McChesney will have help with sure-handed junior Enrique Guerra (480 receiving yards and six touchdowns) and speedy running back Tyler Stachowiak (653 rushing yards and ten touchdowns). Up front, tenacious senior Renato Garcia will lead the offensive line where he can play either tackle or guard.
Defensively, the Falcons also graduated a four-year captain at middle linebacker. However, just like on offense, there are players ready to shine. Nose guard Fernando Ismael Garcia (50 tackles, 12 TFLs) will be a three-year starter who disrupts opposing offenses, while safety Ryan Prepejchal (83 tackles) is a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks after finishing second in 6A with eight interceptions last season. Expect to see Prepejchal contribute some on offense too.
Miguel Pena (45 tackles, two TFLs) will slide down from safety to outside linebacker to help fill gaps in that position room. He’ll be a sound tackler the Falcons can rely on at the second level.
The addition of a PSJA North team that just went 11-1 in 5A Division I will make 32-6A a gauntlet, but Cantu and his players are more than ready for the challenge. They’re ready to attack this season and bring home a third-straight district title.
