Lubbock Coronado Powers through Lubbock High

Thursday night football in West Texas was a showdown between the 5A Lubbock Coronado Mustangs and the 6A Midland High Bulldogs.  The Mustangs dominated the Bulldogs 42-17, giving the Mustangs their first win of the season.

Both of the teams’ defenses showed out in the 1st quarter. Both offenses would go three and out in their opening drives. The Bulldogs started off the scoring of the night with a late 1st quarter field goal, giving them the lead 3-0 after one-quarter of play.

Mustangs Start Rolling

The Mustangs’ first drive of the 2nd quarter produced the game’s first touchdown. Senior running back, Antonio Malone, who had himself a night with 12 rushing attempts for 147 yards, ran it in from two yards out giving Coronado the lead 7-3 early in the 2nd quarter.

On Midland High’s next drive, Coronado’s defensive back Cam Manahan intercepted Bulldog quarterback Landry Walls pass and took it back for a 48-yard pick 6 score. The Mustangs extended their lead 14-3 midway through the 2nd quarter.

Coronado’s defense forced the Bulldogs to punt on their next drive. The Mustangs then scored on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Jett Carroll to wide receiver Jikiri Mcgrew, adding to their lead and making the score 21-3 in the middle of the 2nd quarter.

The Mustangs’ defense forced the Bulldogs to punt once more. Carroll would find a wide-open Trevor Stephens in the middle of the field for a 51-yard touchdown pass. The score by Mustangs extended their lead once more making it a 28-3 ballgame at halftime.

The Mustangs scored 28 unanswered points to finish off the first half.

The Bulldogs then shaved 6:11 off the clock on their first drive of the second half, getting deep into Mustang territory. However, the Bulldogs came up empty and turned it over downs.

The Mustangs returned the favor to the Bulldogs with a turnover on downs at Midland High’s 8-yard line late in the 3rd quarter. The quarter came to an end with the score staying 28-3

4th quarter scoring

The Mustangs’ first drive of the 4th quarter would result in a 6-yard scramble touchdown run by Carroll. With the touchdown, the Mustangs would go up 35-3 early in the 4th.

The Bulldogs’ offense would finally find the end-zone from running back Brylee Perez scoring on a 1-yard run, capping off a 66-yard drive. The Bulldogs would set up for an offside kick and recover it midway through 4th quarter.

Running back Zion Ward bulldozed his way into the end-zone for a 1-yard touchdown with the Bulldogs still trailing the Mustangs 35-17 late in the quarter.

Lubbock Coronado Gets First Win

The Mustangs put the icing on the cake with a late 3-yard score by running back Bricion Griffin. Final Score: Lubbock Coronado 42- Midland High- 17. It was Coronado’s first win of the season.

The Mustangs travel to Amarillo in two weeks after their bye week to take on the Palo Duro Dons to open up district play.

Midland High will look to get back on track next Friday night as they open up district play next Friday night, hosting the Odessa High Broncos at home.
