1st half action

The Mustangs ran some trickery, as running back Antonio Malone hit Surreal Garrett for a 61-yard touchdown pass to start off the scoring. The Mustangs went up 7-0 early in the first.

Monterey’s offense answered right back with a 44-yard bomb from quarterback Blake Porter to Hebrew Hunter to even the score at seven apiece. Monterey’s defense forced the Mustangs to punt on their next possession.

Monterey fumbled the ball with Coronado recovering it, giving their offense excellent field position. The Mustangs’ offense cashed in on the great field position with a 4-yard run from Malone to put the Mustangs back on top 13-7 to end the 1st quarter.

Coronado’s offense found the end zone twice in the 2nd quarter. One score came off a 31-yard pass from quarterback Jett Carroll to Jay’Kel McCutcheon. The other came off a wildcat formation, tight end Trevor Stephens took the direct snap and ran it in for a 3-yard run.

The Mustangs’ defense did not allow a score from the Plainsmen’s offense in the 2nd quarter. Coronado led Monterey 27-7 at the half.

Defensive battle

Most of the 3rd quarter was a battle of the teams’ defenses forcing the opposing offense to punt. The lone touchdown scored in the 3rd came after Coronado’s Cam Manahan intercepted Porter‘s pass in the end zone, and returned it for a 106-yard pick-six. Coronado led Monterey 34-7 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Monterey’s offense found the end zone on a 32-yard screen pass from Porter to Hunter to cut into the Mustangs’ lead. The Plainsmen’s defense then forced a needed fumble and recovered it giving the ball back to their offense.

Monterey’s offense capitalized off the fumble and scored on a 4-yard run to make the score 34-20 middle of the 4th quarter.

The Mustangs marched down the field and answered right back with a 25-yard run from Malone to extend their lead again. Coronado tried to ice the game on their next offensive possession but would be intercepted by Monterey’s Isaiah Vasquez and take it back for a 65-yard pick-six.

The Mustangs then ran out the clock to win the game.

Final: Lubbock Coronado 41- Lubbock Monterey 27

Next up for the Coronado Mustangs is Amarillo Tascosa next Thursday night at home. The Monterey Plainsmen will play Amarillo-Palo Duro, next Friday night in Amarillo.
