Magnolia West Key Players and Storylines

In Magnolia West’s three seasons in 5A under head coach Ben McGehee, the Mustangs won 25 games. In the past two seasons, both in 6A, the Mustangs have won just three.

They’ll be hoping the third year is a charm when it comes to finding success at the top level of Texas high school football. If they’re to do so, it will be up to a revamped offense.

The backfield will be led by junior quarterback Chase Corwin (320 passing yards and three touchdowns) and senior running back Gage Jordan (364 rushing yards and five touchdowns), both of whom are stepping into larger roles in 2026. Corwin served as the Mustangs’ backup last year, while Jordan split carries out of the backfield. Elsewhere, there are a ton of question marks. No returning receiver had over 100 yards last season, and both of the Mustangs’ all-district offensive linemen from last year graduated.

Defensively, Magnolia West is in a little bit better shape with a strong senior core headlined by playmaking safety Dawson Campbell (85 tackles).

Fellow senior Elijah McBride (44 tackles, one INT) has the versatility to line up either next to him at safety or hold his own out on the edge at cornerback. Up front, 6’2″, 205-pound defensive end/outside linebacker Peyton Bjogaard (38 tackles, seven TFLs) will be tasked with creating pressure off the edge.

The Mustangs did break through with their first 6A district win a year ago, but six of their seven district losses came by 28 or more points. They’ll hope the lessons from those big losses begin to pay off as they aim to close the gap on their District 15-6A counterparts this fall.
