Marcus Key Players and Storylines

Marcus has had a heartbreaking end to each of its last two seasons, finishing just one game out of the playoffs both times.

However, it has been an offseason full of roster turnover for the Marauders with just seven returning starters. Only two are back on offense, where it is almost a total rebuild at the skill positions. The Marauders also have to replace their quarterback after Colton Nussmeier transferred.

Sophomore Caleb Steen is the up-and-comer to know. He played quarterback on the freshman team last year but could play some receiver too with his explosiveness in space. 6’4″, 225-pound tight end Berr Kogler (326 receiving yards and four touchdowns) is both a big target in the passing game and a “dominant blocker at the point of attack”, while 6’2″, 270-pound center Grant Gauger will be the anchor up front as a three-year starter.

Defensively, the Marauders do have a strong core in the middle of the field with run-stopping linebacker Gage Patrick (57 tackles, four TFLs) and safety Evan Sacks (56 tackles), who can star in coverage and impact the run defense too. Up front, 6’3″, 240-pound defensive end Liam Hoskins (36 tackles, eight TFLs) brings some pop off the edge.

Head coach Mike Alexander said his guys’ desire for success has been evident over the offseason. With so many new starters, he knows the Marauders will have to focus on improving week by week. But if they can live up to their potential, he believes they have what it takes to make their first playoff appearance in three years.
