The Baker Mayfield ride in Carolina has come to an end.
Early this morning, the Carolina Panthers released the Lake Travis graduate. The decision comes five months after Carolina took a flyer on Mayfield, parting with a paltry fifth-round pick to the Browns. Throughout the season, Mayfield bounced between being the starter, and serving as the second and third string at the position.
Mayfield ended his tenure with career-lows in nearly every statistical category. The parting of ways came after Mayfield requested his release.
Mayfield came from the DI quarterback producing powerhouse Lake Travis. In his two years as a starter, he totaled 6,197 yards through the air for 69 touchdowns, as well as 920 rushing yards for an additional 11 scores.
However, the one-time Cavalier is far from done. Both the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens lost their quarterbacks to injuries over the weekend. Chances are the 2018 No. 1 overall pick will pursue a chance with a playoff contender. Mayfield is owed only $1.4 million for the remainder of the season. If no one is interested, he will likely continue his career as a stellar commercial actor.
