Video of McKinney Head Coach Being Investigated
It’s easy to get lost in McKinney’s massive stadium.
However, McKinney’s head coach was notably absent on the sidelines for the Lions’ second consecutive victory to start the season.
In a report by The Dallas Morning News, a video surfaced on social media last week featuring coach Marcus Shavers hand rolling a cigarette, though what was inside the cigarette was never disclosed. The re-shared post immediately called into question if the cigarette was a joint.
The video was posted by Taryn Parker, a former head volleyball coach at Lake Highlands.
Both accounts on X were quickly deleted.
McKinney Independent School District athletic director Jennifer Frazier announced that a coach would be placed on paid administrative leave pending further information. No word if that coach was specifically Shavers. The statement also addressed the status of student-athletes, claiming District administrators would implement a plan to ensure they were taken care of.
Coach Shavers arrived at McKinney prior to the 2018 season, transferring as the head coach at Lubbock Estacado. So far, he has gone 38-32, reaching the third round of the playoffs with the Lions last season. He also served as the defensive coordinator at West Mesquite and Wichita Falls.
As a student-athlete, Shavers competed as an All-State defensive lineman for Allen, before playing college football at the University of Arkansas.
The team did not seem distracted by the social media drama, continuing their undefeated season with a 35-14 win against Richardson Berkner. The powerhouse is currently fielding five power-conference commits in its senior class — the second-most top-100 recruits in the area.
McKinney squares off with Flower Mound this Friday.
*EDITOR NOTE: The original featured image for this post said “Coach Smoking on Sideline,” and a social media post was made with the same phrase. This was an error made during editing and not an error by the writer. The coach was not smoking on the sideline in the video that the article references. The video circulated on social media clearly shows the coach within some type of home, reportedly (though not verified) his own. While one of the goals of all headlines is to encourage viewers to read more and to entertain our audience, we are committed to factual headlines and writing, and we apologize for this mistake.
