Mesquite Horn Key Players and Storylines
Mesquite Horn was one of the big winners of realignment, escaping the District of Doom to the neighboring District 10-6A.
After Vernon Hughes departed to take the head coaching job at Converse Judson, Robert Boone steps in after leading Carrollton Newman-Smith to the playoffs in each of the past three seasons.
He has quite the foundation to work with offensively. 6’2″, 295-pound junior center Chaska Martin, 6’5″, 270-pound sophomore tackle Damari Woodson and 6’2″, 295-pound sophomore guard Nehemiah Avery are all Division I prospects. Avery started every game as a freshman last year.
They’ll have good speed behind them as Harvard commit Kai Furtch (423 receiving yards and five touchdowns) slides over to quarterback from his usual receiver position this year. Look for Santana Carrizosa (224 receiving yards and two touchdowns) to step up in his place at receiver after averaging over 20 yards per catch last fall.

Defensively, the Jaguars aren’t as big in the front seven, but they’ll still be productive with leading returning tackler Keyandre Sheffield (27 tackles) and rangy defensive end Omari Samuels. There’s more size in the secondary with 6’1″ defensive back Ja’Varris Williams (24 tackles) and 5’11”, 180-pound cornerback Peter Okafor.
The Jaguars haven’t made the playoffs the past three seasons, but a combination of a new district, a new coaching staff, and a strong group of returners has given them belief they can contend for a top four spot in District 10-6A this fall.
