The battle for 5A-1 Region IV District 15 was a South Texas battle to remember Friday night. Miller came into this game undefeated on the season at 6-0, while Flour Bluff was 5-1 and undefeated in district. What we saw was two different styles of play on the field, a physical high energy game, and 20 unanswered points by miller in a comeback win 34-28.
South Texas may not be as known for high profile teams and stadiums like other areas, but South Texans love their teams as much as anyone. That support was on full display this past Friday night. With big plays coming around often, and two communities full of pride in their teams, you could imagine what the environment was like. The winner of this game would take first place in the district, and likely come away with the district championship this season.
Miller ran a lot of 10 personnel, with tempo, and big play potential. They struggled at times to run the football, but QB Andrew Body’s running ability helped make up for that. Andrew Body came into this game as the districts passing leader with 1908 yards passing, 26 TD, and a .651 completion percentage. The slant was working all night it seemed, with Jr WR Adraen Lloyd splitting the two Safeties up the middle of the field for big plays. When Sr WR Cassius Clay got single coverage, quick passes to the boundary would help move the chains and keep the offense on the field.
Flour Bluff played a different brand of football. They threw the ball when they had to, but the running game led by RB Isaac Miles carried this football team. Isaac came Into this game averaging 10.2 yards per carry and chipped away at the miller defense all night. The defensive line stood out for this defense and played a great game. They made it difficult for miller to run the football and put pressure on Andrew Body all night. The secondary did give up some big plays, but tackled well for most of the game.
At the start of the 2nd it was a 14-14 game. Flour bluff kicked off , but the Bucs were unable to secure the ball and Hornets started off with an extra possession. They would capitalize on that possession with a TD to make the game 21-14. Towards the end of the 3rd quarter it was a 28-14 game led by the Hornets. After a 4th and 1 stop in the red zone by the Hornets, and the game at 28-14 towards the end of the 3rd, it seemed like the momentum was all theirs. To close out the 3rd quarter, Miller scored and started their 20 unanswered point run to ultimately end with the 34-28 victory. It was the lowest score on the season for the Buccaneers, and the most points given up by the Hornet defense this season.
The win puts the Miller Bucs at 7-0 and 1st place in the district. Flour bluff is now 5-2 holding down 2nd place. The Bucs will play 3rd place Corpus Christi Veterans Memorial on Friday October 25th. Veterans is currently 6-1 with their only loss being Flour Bluff earlier in the season. Flour Bluff will play Victoria West, who currently sit at 4th in district with a 3-4 overall record.
