Muenster Key Players and Storylines
Muenster earned a dominant 28-0 victory over Shiner in last year’s 2A Division II State Title Game, but new challenges await. The Hornets are moving up to 2A Division I for the first time ever (they did play in the old 1A Division I back in 2011). They also have to replace do-it-all quarterback Casen Carney, who accounted for 61 touchdowns last season.
Next up, it’s time for senior quarterback Carter Heller to get the keys to the offense. He’ll keep defenses on their toes with his physical running style. Maverick Bayer (585 receiving yards and nine touchdowns) will do everything from running back to receiver on offense, while running back Dustyn Croft (714 rushing yards, 652 receiving yards) returns after also making a huge impact both on the ground and through the air last season. Up front, Braxton Berend slides from tackle to guard, where he’ll play one of the most important roles on Muenster’s offensive line.

Defensively, it all starts up front with 5’10”, 250-pound defensive tackle Colt Watlerscheid (36 tackles, six TFLs), who will be a three-year starter. Behind him, linebacker Brady Klement (68 tackles) may not be physically intimidating but he flies around and makes plays. Safety Titan Binder is the player opposing quarterbacks will have to be wary of after he recorded seven interceptions as a freshman.
For the Hornets’ 13 returning lettermen, they have gotten a ton of experience in practices with the six extra weeks each of the past two seasons. They’ll need to get up to speed on Friday nights quick but Carney believes this team has what it takes to make another deep playoff run even with the jump in divisions.
