One of the greatest Texas high school football products of the modern era is headed west.
The Cleveland Browns have agreed to trade Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in a blockbuster deal that sends edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 third-round pick to Cleveland. For the Rams, this is a loud, unmistakable Super Bowl move. For Garrett, it is a chance to chase the one thing missing from a future first-ballot Hall of Fame resume.
Before Garrett became one of the NFL’s most feared pass rushers, he was a Texas high school football force at Arlington Martin. He was a football, basketball and track standout, and as a senior, he recorded 19.5 sacks. He also won the Landry Award, given to the top high school football player in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
Garrett then stayed in-state and became a monster at Texas A&M. In three seasons with the Aggies, he totaled 145 tackles, 48.5 tackles for loss and 32.5 sacks before becoming the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
His NFL career has been exactly what everyone expected, and maybe more. Garrett leaves Cleveland as one of the best players in franchise history, with 125.5 career sacks, two Defensive Player of the Year awards, seven Pro Bowls and five First-Team All-Pro selections. He also set the NFL single-season sack record with 23 sacks in 2025.
Now, he joins a Rams team clearly pushing its chips to the middle of the table. Los Angeles already had Super Bowl expectations, and adding Garrett gives the defense a game-wrecking centerpiece.
For Texas fans, it is another reminder of just how far Garrett has come from Arlington Martin.
From Texas high school star to Aggie legend to NFL superstar, Garrett has already built a rare football story.
Now he gets a new chapter in Los Angeles, with a real shot at finishing it with a ring.
