Nederland Beats Defending Champs 24-21

The Nederland Bulldogs pulled off a stunning 24-21 upset over Port Neches-Groves, ending PNG’s 22-game winning streak in front of over 13,000 fans on Friday night. This win not only shook up the hierarchy of Southeast Texas football but also gave Nederland sole possession of first place in District 8-5A-II, improving to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in district play.

Running back Hubert Thomas played a key role, rushing for 147 yards and scoring two second-half touchdowns, helping Nederland build a 24-7 lead by the third quarter. Although PNG fought back, cutting the deficit and driving late, Nederland’s defense sealed the win with a crucial interception by James Ladner.

With two games remaining, the Bulldogs are now on a five-game winning streak, assuring a return to the postseason. The victory was especially sweet for first-year coach Scott Rich and his squad, securing their position as district leaders.
