New Texas State Coach Vows to Recruit Texas Talent
Signing day is approaching, and one Texas college doesn’t have a single pledge for the New Year. Previously, Texas State relied on the NCAA transfer portal, featuring an average of 20 transfers over the past three years. Now, the school has hired Gilmer standout G.J. Kinne as their 21st head coach, with the promise of focusing specifically on local high school prospects.
The former Incarnate Word frontman will not only focus on seeking talent to flesh out his San Marcos roster, but search for local coaching staff as well.
“I’m going to hire a great staff,” said Kinne to the Austin American-Statesman. “A staff that knows Texas. One that can recruit the coaches and players in the great state of Texas. I’m going to hire a staff that are going to be great role models for our student athletes… Once again, we are going to recruit Texas high school football.”
So far, ten Bobcats have entered the transfer portal since former coach Jake Spavital got sacked earlier this month. Wide receiver Ashtyn Hawkins (DeSoto), safety Jarron Morris (West Orange Stark), and safety Tory Spears (Cypress Woods) will return after much convincing by coach Kinne’s vision, which is based entirely in keeping graduates within our state’s borders.
