Regents Football to Begin New Era in 2026

Regents School of Austin is making big moves on the football front, starting with a heartfelt coaching transition that emphasizes legacy, leadership, and faith.

After six seasons as Head Coach, including a 2020 TAPPS State Championship, Tim Phillips will be stepping into a new role. He’ll coach one final season at the helm in 2025 before transitioning to Assistant Coach in 2026.

“It has always been one of my goals for one of my assistant coaches to take over when he was ready,” said Phillips, who started volunteering with Regents football back in 2011 and has never accepted a dime for his work. The Regents football program has a long history of success. I took over a program that had won over 90 percent of its games over four years, and our staff has kept up that winning tradition.”

Stepping into the spotlight next is current Athletic Director and Assistant Coach Kyle Shotwell, who will serve as Assistant Head Coach in 2025 and become Head Coach in 2026.

“It’s an incredible honor to lead a program with such a rich tradition,” Shotwell said. “The foundation laid by Tim Phillips and Beck Brydon over 20 years, marked by discipleship, hard work, and a relentless pursuit of excellence, will continue to be our standard. I’m humbled to carry that torch forward.”

Shotwell, a former standout at Cal Poly and NFL practice squad alum, brings serious football chops and faith to the job. Inducted into the Cal Poly Athletic Hall of Fame in 2024, he joined Regents in 2023 and quickly became a steady presence in the athletic department.

“I couldn’t be more excited to build on that legacy with a new generation of young athletes committed to Christ, character development, and championship-level football,” Shotwell added.

Regents’ Head of School, Dr. Dan Peterson, praised both men: “I am thankful to have such incredible men and faithful servant leaders as Tim Phillips and Kyle Shotwell shepherding our football program now and into the future. Their commitment to discipling student-athletes and honoring Christ through competition is the foundation of Regents athletics.”

This coaching transition isn’t just about a new play-caller—it’s a continuation of a football program that values mentorship, faith, and excellence just as much as wins on the field. The Regents community should be excited about what’s ahead.
