Sunray is off to the regional final for the first time in 16 years.
But to get there, they had to beat one of the best in the Wellington Skyrockets, who had made it to the regional finals in each of the past four seasons.
Bobcat quarterback Armando Lujan had another big night finishing with three total touchdowns as the Bobcats held off Wellington 36-22. At one point in the first half, it was 23-22, but Lujan found Damian Barragan for a 35-yard touchdown. That gave the Bobcats the breathing room they needed to go on and secure the victory in the second half.
Dawson Bennett also had a 35-yard touchdown catch in the first half, while Arnold Mendoza had two rushing scores in the game.
Sunray has never made a state title game appearance but has made the state semifinals twice. They will look to earn their third appearance this Friday when they take on Clarendon in Canyon in the 2A Division II Region I final.
