UPDATED: Tony Romo Retiring From Football, Stepping Into Broadcast Booth With CBS

It appears that we have a clear picture of Tony Romo’s future and it shows that it takes place as a sportscaster and not as an active quarterback. According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Todd Archer, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo will step away from football and his next step will be in the broadcast booth. That same report indicates that Romo would likely be released on Tuesday.

There had been speculation that Romo would go to the Broncos and Texans either via a trade or a release. As that was happening, reports also started emerging that FOX and CBS were both interested in Romo’s services as a broadcaster. It appears that Romo has decided to take the latter route.

Romo had dealt with several injuries over the last couple of years, including breaking a bone in his back during the preseason last season. That injury gave an opportunity to fourth-round draft pick and later NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year in Dak Prescott.

Romo came into the league into 2003 as an undrafted free agent from Eastern Illinois. He got his first start in 2006 under then-head coach Bill Parcells and never let go of that job until this pas season. The four-time Pro Bowler finishes his career as the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdown passes.

UPDATE: The Dallas Cowboys have made it official, announcing they have released Tony Romo.

We also know where Romo will be headed. Earlier this afternoon, CBS Sports officially announced that Romo would become the lead game analyst on its NFL coverage, taking the place of longtime analyst Phil Simms. As Romo posted on his Twitter account, he is ready to get to work.
