Returning 6A DII State Champs, Austin Westlake Chaparrals, Win Opener

Austin Westlake Chaparrals 53 / Schertz Clemens Buffaloes 7

Westlake has started off their quest to repeat as state champions with a dominating week 1 performance over the Buffaloes of Schertz Clemens.  The dominant performance started with a 26-0 lead and was topped off by a 19-yard touchdown run by Luke Respass.

Westlakes expected high scoring offense was on full display. They are led by Quarterback Cade Klubnik, who can beat teams with the pass and with his feet. Jaden Greathouse, who started as a Freshmen at wide-receiver, and running back Zane Minors leading a talented group of playmakers.  Westlake is tough on defense too, especially in the secondary with Carter Barksdale and Michael Taaffe leading the way.   The Chaparrals are our preseason pick to once again win the 6A DII State Championship.  They play at Hewitt Midway. The Panthers of Midway have a good team, with a strong offensive line and they return their Quarterback Jared Moore and Wide Reciever Jaylon Gibson.  Westlake will have their hands full on the road.

Head Coach Jared Johnston and the Buffaloes are coming off of an impressive 10-2 season.  This is a rough start for them, especially on defense where they were expected to shine.  They are lead on defense by one of the best Safety in the state, Mason Chambers, and other outstanding defensive players like Derric Lewis and Jackson Macias.  The Buffaloes have a very tough schedule this year, but we look for them to bounce back and be competitive next week when they face San Angelo Central.
