Rockwall-Heath Coach In Hot Seat For 400 Push-Up Punishment
Too many push-ups got a Rockwall-Heath High School head football coach pushed out of the program.
Several Texas HS Football players were hospitalized after they were forced to endure up to 400 push-ups in an hour as punishment by their coach. This looks like a cool exercise in the movies, like the recent training drills in Top Gun: Maverick, or the trailer for the new Creed movie. However, in reality, high-octane endurance without water breaks can cause hospitalization for rhabdomyolysis, which results in kidney damage or failure.
Rockwall-Heath head football coach John Harrell is now on leave pending an investigation. The school has retained an independent third party to look into the incident.
Coach Harrell has been part of the school’s program since 2019. He led the team to a 7-5 record this year after going 11-2 in 2021, and 11-3 in 2020.
At least eight students were treated at a local Dallas hospital.
