It’s finally here. Playoffs, what every student-athlete has been preparing for since spring ball started last year. There are quite a few in the San Antonio area who have impressed this year. We’ve put together quite the list of games to watch this week, including the statewide game of the week.
O’Connor (10-0) VS. Clemens (8-2)
Clemens finished the season 1-2 in the last three weeks. It hasn’t seen its sharpest performances in the last few weeks but is still a dangerous team. Led by running back Marshawn Brown, the Buffaloes can keep the ball away from anyone in the state. If it can score with the likes of O’Connor, which averages 44.3 points a game, there’s a chance for an upset. However, it could also get ugly as the Buffaloes have had an offense who hasn’t put up much against stellar teams. Regardless, this is our statewide game of the week for a reason, as both teams are extremely good and are a combined 18-2 for a reason.
Judson (9-1) VS Warren (6-4)
Warren did what it needed against the teams it should have. It didn’t take down Brennan, O’Connor, MacArthur, and Churchill. The only team it beat that has a winning record was Jay. The defense has allowed more points than the offense has scored, which is never a good sign. The matchup against the powerhouse that is Judson doesn’t help. Judson could, or could not, be without star quarterback Julon Williams. Williams has missed recent games with a deep bone bruise. It depends on how close Warren can keep it, but this game is likely Judson’s to lose.
Steele (6-4) VS Brennan (6-4)
These two 6-4 teams are more different than you could imagine. First, Brennan was one OT touchdown away from being the district champion. Second, Steele allowed 30 or more in four games this season, all of which it lost. Steele finished the season on a high note, beating Clemens 14-13, so the defense should be reeling with excitement. Brennan has plenty of playmakers on the offensive side but has had troubles in the past stopping potent offenses. Steele running back Brendan Brady is key in this game. He has over 1,300 yards on the season and if he can help Steele control the game, it’s a possible win for the Knights.
Floresville (6-4) VS Alice (7-3)
Alice has the potential to unleash the monster on offense. Floresville has the offense and skill players, but some things raise questions. Once the Tigers lost Salih Williams to injury early in its game to Southside, it lost its groove. The team didn’t score in the second half and quarterback Darian Mayberry missed on plenty of open passes. Alice held its own against tough opponents this year and got away with only three losses. It’ll be a tough task for Floresville.
Southside (8-2) VS Flour Bluff (8-1)
Flour Bluff is not a team you want to mess with. Its one loss on the season was by three points. Take that game out and it’s winning games by an average of 21.56 points. Southside is also a great team, led by a running back in Eddie Perez who can’t be stopped. He has 2,425 yards and 29 touchdowns in only 10 games. Southside is able to score and do it fast, with its star back. It showed that much in last weeks game against Floresville when it rattled off 29 straight to win the district. Had O’Connor and Clemens been a different week, this would be the game of the week.
