Roosevelt Key Players and Storylines
Roosevelt came agonizingly close to its first playoff berth since 2020 a year ago. The Rough Riders finished on the wrong end of a three-way tiebreaker for the final playoff spot in District 27-6A.
15 starters return from that team, and the offense should be electric. Quarterback Xavion Chambers (950 passing yards and 517 rushing yards) is a dual threat who fuels the Rough Rider offense. He’ll have “Sonic and Knuckles” behind him with speed back Lamarque Mackey (454 rushing yards and five touchdowns) and powerback Ernest Smith (548 rushing yards and nine touchdowns). Up front, the Rough Riders have a legit star in 6’8”, 297-pound tackle Kaeden Scott, a Texas A&M commit.

There’s more Division I talent on defense with safety Rayne Russell-Fields (96 tackles), a 2025 unanimous first team all-district selection. In the front seven, linebacker Jarvin Turcious can get downhill in a hurry, while defensive end Nick Medina is a dangerous pass rusher with his speed off the edge.
Head coach Darnell Barnes is excited about the combination of speed and size Roosevelt has on its roster this year. He believes this group has paid its dues and is ready to turn the corner and snap the Rough Riders’ five-year playoff drought.
