Southwest Key Players and Storylines
For the first time since 2017, Southwest will play on the biggest stage in Texas. With 20 consecutive playoff appearances in their back pocket, the Dragons hope to not skip a beat as they move back up to 6A.
However, a top four district finish is the minimum expectation for a group that returns 15 starters.
Offensively, the Dragons will look to ground and pound their opponents to oblivion. Last year, they finished with over 2,400 rushing yards compared to just 766 passing yards.
Junior running back Dre Voss (548 rushing yards and nine touchdowns) is “one of the best backs in the city” in the eyes of head coach Alejandro Franco. He’ll make a strong one-two punch with senior Ryan Garay (516 rushing yards and four touchdowns).

C/o 28’ (8-3)
6’4”, 280-pound tackle Caden Taylor will pave the way for those backs as part of a veteran offensive line. When Southwest does turn to the passing attack, Jaevon Means is the big-play threat. He averaged 18.8 yards per catch and finished with 471 receiving yards in 2025.
Defensively, middle linebacker Luis Alba (95 tackles) is exactly the leader teams want at the heart of their defense. Junior cornerback Tyshawn Holder (61 tackles, two INTs) burst onto the scene last year as the Defensive Newcomer of the Year while senior Romaeus Hernandez is one of several players Southwest will need to step up on an inexperienced defensive line.
The last time Southwest was in 6A from 2014-2017, the Dragons won 25 games across those four seasons. They’ll be expecting similar success this time around as they aim to contend for a district title this fall.
