San Benito Key Players and Storylines

Give San Benito credit. The Greyhounds won the games that mattered last year. Their only two wins came in district play but that was enough to get them in the playoffs for the 12th-straight year.

The Greyhounds’ back-to-back two-win seasons were partly a result of challenging themselves against the likes of Westlake and Carthage in non-district, but still, this is a program with higher expectations in the win column.

The Greyhound offense will expect to improve on the 13.4 points per game they averaged in 2025 with both quarterback Albert Gonzalez and running back Axel Hernandez returning in the backfield. Both earned second team all-district honors last season. Receiver Sonny Ratliff is another player to watch after he burst onto the scene as a freshman a year ago.

The offensive line loses three all-district players, but the defensive line has a clear leader with unanimous first team all-district defensive tackle Ramon De La Rosa. Behind him, outside linebacker Josh Castillo poses a threat off the edge while ballhawk safety Henry Quiroz is another returning first team all-district honoree.

San Benito has a tough but more manageable non-district schedule this time around. With leaders returning on both sides of the ball, the Greyhounds will look to get off to a quicker start this fall to get ready for a highly competitive District 32-6A.
