Southlake Carroll Opens Season With Statement Drubbing Of Midland
Southlake Carroll opened their year with a triumph over Midland 48-24 on Friday night in a non-district matchup at Dragon Stadium. The Dragons were dominant on the offensive end, scoring seven of its eight offensive possessions without a punt through regulation.
The Dragons got out to a hot start, embarking on a five-play 75-yard opening drive with a four-yard touchdown scramble that got Southlake Carroll out front 7-0. At least at the start, the Dragons found difficulty defending Midland’s triple-option attack; the first quarter ended in a 14-14 tie.
The second period distanced the Class 6A state championship contender from their opponent, racking up 21 unanswered points on the Bulldogs.
Midland chewed over six minutes off the clock to begin the second half, staging a 17-play drive that ended in a meager field goal.
USC commit Riley Wormley led the Dragons with 126 rushing yards on seven carries and a touchdown. Quarterback Angelo Renda threw to seven different receivers for 193 passing yards on a remarkable 14-of-17 attempts, including three touchdowns and two rushing scores for 48 yards on four carries; all three of his throwing scores were to receiver Brock Boyd.
On Midland’s roster, running back Elijah McCoy finished with 182 rushing yards on 30 carries for two touchdowns, contributing heavily to the team’s 368 yards of total rushing.
Southlake Carroll next takes on Hebron at Brian Brazil Stadium. Midland looks to even their W/L record against Pebble Hills at SAC Stadium.
