Spring Key Players and Storylines

It’s a new era for Spring as Fort Bend Hightower offensive coordinator KaRon Coleman takes over the program. He has head coaching experience in Alabama, but this will be his first lead job in Texas.

Coleman oversaw a Hightower offense that averaged at least 28 points per game in each of his five seasons as offensive coordinator. That will be big because Spring scored just 90 total points a year ago, their fewest in a season since 1981.

Senior running back Vincent Lee (628 rushing yards and four touchdowns) is one of Spring’s four returning starters on that side of the ball. They’ll lean on him to wear down opposing defenses throughout the fall. Senior quarterback Landon Hathcock appears set to get the nod behind center with his “clutch decision making.”  He won’t shy away from the pressure and is a player that can elevate the entire team.

He’ll be glad to have 6’1”, 270-pound tackle Maiyron Gamble in front of him, a player who the Lion coaching staff is confident can eliminate the best pass rusher on opposing teams.

Defensively, Spring’s strength lies in the trenches with defensive ends Chase Lewis (51 tackles, 11 TFLs) and Kelvin Sumo (22 tackles, five TFLs) collapsing the pocket for opposing quarterbacks. Cornerback Kevunn Lauderdale (29 tackles, one INT) will provide aggressive press coverage on the perimeter as he looks to nullify other teams’ top receivers.

The Lion coaching staff has loved how their guys have been willing to put in the work. Execution hasn’t always been there, but this year will be all about building the culture needed to sustain success for seasons to come.
