Tascosa Defeats Coronado in Defensive Battle 29-16

ABC Bank

On Friday, the Coronado Mustangs traveled to Amarillo’s Dick Bivins Stadium to take on the Tascosa Rebels. The Mustangs are currently on a three-game losing streak after falling to Abilene Cooper last week, 53-7, but looked to change that against the Rebels. The Rebels are also coming off a loss, falling to Permian, 50-48, but aimed to bounce back.

The game started slowly for both teams as the first score came at the end of the first quarter when Coronado converted a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. Tascosa responded with a touchdown, but both defenses forced punts with little offensive success. After another drive, the Mustangs converted on a 68-yard field goal, leading 9-7. Despite little scoring in the first quarter, the second half had sparse action as Coronado reached the end zone toward the end of the 2nd quarter. Despite this, the Rebels answered with a kickoff return touchdown, cutting the lead to 16-14.

Going into the 3rd quarter, the only score came from a Rebels touchdown after both defenses kept shutting down each other’s offenses. With the 4th quarter starting, the Rebels forced a Mustang turnover, only to turn the ball over themselves on the next drive. After regaining possession, the Mustangs fumbled the ball, which was recovered and taken to the house by the Rebels, extending their lead to 29-16. After that Rebel score, there were no further points from either team.

Tascosa wins 29-16.

Next week, the Coronado Mustangs will continue district play as they take on the Monterey Plainsmen, who are 1-4 this season and are coming off a 50-42 loss to Amarillo.
