Team Cancels Season Due to COVID-19
CLICK HERE FOR THE UPDATE: Runge Switching to Six-Man
Football is back. And, apparently, COVID-19 shutdowns are back.
The Runge Yellowjackets are shutting down their entire 2023 football season, citing a COVID-19 outbreak as the reason for cancellation. All of the Yellowjacket opponents this year, including all of their games in District 14-2A Division II, will receive an automatic win via forfeit. The school district has been in a shutdown, (story here), and the Yellowjackets had already forfeited their first two games of the season.
This is tough news for the Yellowjackets team, who, after a 0-8 2021 and 1-9 2022, were looking to show that, even as the school with the smallest enrollment in 2A, they could put together a winning season as they did in 2020 when they went 6-4. The team was already short-handed, with just 16 players listed on their roster prior to the season, and it will be interesting to see if switching to six-man football, something the school was trying to avoid, may be in the future for Runge.
