Despite losing out of the playoff to eventual state champions, Brock, Denver City moved up to Class 4A and will face new competition and some old foes. The Mustangs will have a new head coach this season, Daniel Fontenot, after Steve Taylor stepped down, but will remain the school’s athletic director.

Denver City will be grouped with Perryton, Brownfield, Bushland and Dalhart in District 1-4AD2.

It will not be an easy task for the Mustangs, but the players are looking to step up to the new challenge ahead of them.

A large graduating class hurt the Mustangs and will leave holes to fill on both sides of the ball. With Cole McLeroy graduating, Kade Patterson will step up at the quarterback spot. Matthew De La Rosa will be adjusting to running back, but has the speed of a wide receiver, which should help the offense. Wesley Newberry will also be in the backfield. On the defensive side, Louis Ontiveros will be leading on the defensive line, recording 61 tackles in 2015.

With a tough district slate, the Mustangs will open up the season at home against Lovington (NM) on August 26.
