Follett Key Players and Storylines
John Anderson II comes in from Sanderson to take over at Follett after Kyle Timmons left to take a position on staff at Happy.
He said he’s excited to take over a program that has now earned three-straight district titles.
“Taking over a program like Follett is an honor,” Anderson II said. “With the past success this program has had, the goal for this season is to carry on a tradition of winning they have implemented.”
Despite the graduation of last year’s district MVP Shayne Franks, Follett still returns three starters on each side of the ball.
Among those returning players are junior utility back David Meeks, who had 19 total touchdowns offensively in 2022, and senior running back Osiel Ventura (522 rushing yards, 10 touchdowns). In the passing game, 6’1” receiver Maddox Miller will be a threat opposing teams will have to keep an eye on. He earned second team all-district at the position last season.
Defensively, Justin Humbert Jr. (102 solo tackles) will be a force on the defensive line, while Meeks (101 tackles) and Ventura will play key roles from their positions in the secondary.
Anderson II said that his only concern with his team this year is that they are a little undersized. However, he thinks they can make up for it with their team speed.
This will be Follett’s third coach in just three seasons. However, with the work ethic Follett’s players have displayed, Anderson II believes his team has what it takes to maintain their perch atop the district.
“The goal this season is going to be ‘Earn The Right To Win’,” Anderson said. “Just because of the success in the past we still have to earn everything we want out of this season. There’s a lot of returners with experience [who are] willing to do whatever it takes to carry on the tradition of success this program has built.”
