Let’s be clear, every game at this point in the playoffs is crucial.
Teams who make it past the first and second rounds are all contenders for the championship. But, for most, the Texas high school playoffs are over and don’t know who to watch now. For those, here are some interesting games in Region 4 to keep an eye on.
Lake Travis vs. Los Fresnos
Lake Travis has probably one of the best combinations in the state. Its quarterback Matthew Baldwin and receiver Garrett Wilson can score on almost any interaction. The thing is, they aren’t facing a slouch of a defense. Los Fresnos has allowed more than 20 two times this year and intercepted opposing quarterbacks 18 times. Add onto that a five and a half hour drive down to Los Fresnos and it could mean for a tough game for the Cavaliers. Lake Travis is a favorite to take home the championship, but it will have to jump this tall hurdle first.
O’Connor vs. San Benito
Friday night at Buccaneer stadium all the way in Corpus Christi will have yet another intriguing matchup. Two undefeated teams, both averaging more than 40 points a game could make for a classic shootout. The defenses won’t just sit idly, though. O’Connor can pressure the quarterback and force missed throws with the best of them while San Benito is averaging 3.5 sacks a game. This one will come down to a battle in the trenches.
Cuero vs. Navarro
Cuero won in blowout fashion last week, scoring 70 points against Crystal City. Its offense is running on all cylinders as almost everyone is a threat to score It’s only issue is the occasional off-target throw from quarterback Drew Riemenschneider. That’s not a knock on him though, as he still has only two interceptions on the year and the Gobblers can afford it when they have two future Division I receivers. He’ll need to be careful this week, as Navarro has grabbed plenty of sacks on the season, so there may be a rushed throw or two. This won’t be a blowout by any means, as both teams scored a combined 141 last week.
Others
There are plenty of other games the staff here will keep an eye on in this region. Beginning with Westlake against Vela, Tivy and Calallen and McCollum and Alice.
Alice is in the playoffs for the first time in a long time and will be looking to stay in as its first-year coach is bringing football back to prominence.
