Texas Touch In Richmond, VA

COLONIAL HEIGHTS — Before he moved to Colonial Heights, Darien Canada lived in San Antonio and played high school football. But his experience there didn’t match the made-for-television version of high school football in Texas.

Games on Friday nights didn’t draw every citizen in town, and the stadium wasn’t gigantic. His school, Robert G. Cole, was a small facility in Fort Sam Houston. Capacity was a modest 1,200.

But there was one part of the aura of Texas high school football that was reality: the fervor. No matter how small the stadiums were, they were always packed. The interest among the students was serious.
