Tomball Memorial Key Players and Storylines

There’s no question where Tomball Memorial’s focus has been this offseason. The Wildcats gave up at least 42 points in seven of their eight district games last year. The offense did average 37.9 points per game, but it often just couldn’t keep pace in wild shootouts.

This year, the Wildcats will turn to Jacob Kubeczka to take over at quarterback. He showed flashes a year ago, accounting for 14 touchdowns and a 2-1 record in his three starts. He’ll have help at the skill positions too with senior running back Carson West and playmaking slot receiver Carter Hamilton (545 receiving yards and four touchdowns).

Defensively, all five all-district players from last year’s unit all graduated. Safety Ryan Surratt (47 tackles, one INT) had a huge impact down the stretch last season after switching over from receiver. He’ll join forces with fellow senior safety Brock Baumann, while Justus Loucks is coming off a strong sophomore season at linebacker.

There’s a ton of fresh faces on defense, and they’ll need to make strides immediately. The Wildcats haven’t averaged less than 30 points per game since 2016, so expect them to have some pop again this season. That offensive firepower will be crucial if they’re to rebound after back-to-back 4-6 campaigns.
