It’s hard to believe that the Texas high school football regular season is already coming to an end with the playoffs right around the corner. Teams are either starting to make the moves needed to make it to the postseason or trying to hold on. The season has not disappointed yet and don’t expect it to start this week. Here are the top five things to watch for in week nine.
A Battle in South Dallas
The No. 1 ranked DeSoto Eagles are scheduled to play tonight against No. 22 Duncanville in a District 7-6A clash. Both teams are on the right path for the playoffs and both are coming off impressive wins the last time out. Remember that Duncanville gave Cedar Hill a scare in a close 54-50 game; the Longhorns scored 27 points in the fourth quarter for the comeback win. This one could be a lot closer than what people are predicting. Duncanville is different this year.
District 10-6A Dominance
Texas high school football fans are getting better and better at pronouncing Sachse. With an impressive 7-0 records, both Sachse and Rowlett are making waves in District 10-6A. This week’s matchup features a balanced Rowlett side that depends on the arm of quarterback Preston Weeks. The junior quarterback has shown poise for Rowlett, as the Eagles have won three close games this season by a margin of five points or less. Sachse features an outstanding junior quarterback as well; Jalen Mayden has accumulated 1,635 yards passing with 17 touchdowns and only three interceptions.
Mustang-Panther Rivalry
For Colleyville Heritage and Grapevine, something seems different this season. Both the Panthers and Mustangs have been playing excellent football this season and it culminates with tonight’s rivalry game. At 5-2, the Panthers have only lost to Euless Trinity and Aledo. At 6-1, Grapevine is coming off their first loss this season to Richland. Look for Mustangs quarterback Alan Bowman to keep his amazing season rolling, the junior has 27 passing touchdowns this season. Let the battle of highway 26 begin!
Who Takes the Lead in District 9-4A?
Tonight’s matchup between the Robinson Rockets and Lorena Leopards will likely decide the outcome of District 9-4A. The Leopards are gaining steam with four consecutive wins after a rough 0-3 start. The Rockets have been sharp this season in route to a 6-1 record with the only loss to Gatesville back in week five. The easy pick here is Robinson, but don’t be too sure. Anything can happen in a rivalry game.
8-0 versus 6-0, who wins?
The Hallettsville and Rice Consolidated game tonight has huge implications. Aside from the obvious, both teams have undefeated records. This could impact District 14-3A in more ways than one. The Brahmas have been on a tear this season, outscoring opponents by a margin of 296-96. Arguably even better, the Raiders have outscored their opponents 233-47. Something’s got to give in this 14-3A matchup.
