Tyrell McCrea Named As New Chaparral Coach & Athletic Director
Entering its third season, the Chaparral Bobcats will have a new coach on the sidelines—the school’s second-ever.
Killeen ISD and executive director for athletics Matt Carroll introduced coach Tyrell McCrea as the man for the job. He will also serve as the Chaparral’s athletic coordinator.
Coach McCrea is stepping in for coach Alan Haire, who left the program this earlier this summer to become the athletic director and head football coach at Jarrell.
Killeen ISD released the following statement:
“We are blessed to have Coach McCrea take over our athletic coordinator and football head coach position at Chaparral. He brings a winning spirit and dedicated work ethic, and he’s known for his high character and love for kids. We are excited for the future of Chaparral football.”
Coach McCrea previously served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for Class 4A Comal Davenport, which won a district title last season. Before serving on the Wolves’ coaching staff, coach McCrea made stops at San Antonio Burbank (2020-22), as well as two different stints at his alma mater Del Rio High School (2013-15, 2017-19).
The Bobcats are licking their wounds after opening last season dropping four of their first five contests, finishing the year at a paltry 3-7. Despite the record, there were flashes of promise in the heavily run-based wing-T formation offense. Specifically, senior Keith Tyler, who produced a league-high 1,209 yards and 13 touchdowns rushing last season.
The Bobcats will open their Class 5A season on Aug. 30 at Kyle Lehman. A week later, they will make their home debut against Manor New Tech at Joseph L. Searles III Stadium.
