UIL Approves Wearable Tech and Guardian Caps for 2025

UIL wearable tech

Texas high school football is getting a tech upgrade next season. The UIL just approved new rules that will let teams use wearable technology to call plays starting in 2025.

Instead of shouting from the sidelines or holding up signs, coaches can send in plays through wristbands, watches, or belt packs. It is one-way communication only, so players can get the plays but cannot talk back. Coaches will still have to run everything from the booth because tablets and sideline tech are still off-limits.

Another big change is that Guardian caps are officially allowed during games now, too, as long as they match the helmet color. So expect to see more of those padded shells during Friday night lights. Coaches and athletic trainers have been pushing for their use for a while, and now players can get that extra layer of protection in actual game action, not just practice.

Texas likes to follow NCAA football rules, but is doing things its way with this one. While college teams got full helmet communication last year, the UIL is starting small by easing into wearable tech. Some coaches love the change, some are still on the fence, but either way, it will be something new to watch this fall.

It might not be full-on futuristic football yet, but things are moving that way.
