UTSA has been the surprise of Texas FBS recruiting, attracting 26 commits and a top ranking for Conference USA 2017 class. The peak came yesterday when the Roadrunners nabbed Samuel Barnes, one of the highest rated athlete on their incoming roster. The George Ranch cornerback fielded over twenty FBS offers before deciding on UTSA, turning down other offers from several Power 5 programs including Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Oregon.

A former wide receiver, Barnes didn’t make the jump to defensive back until this season, leading most pundits to believe that he would be a steal for teams since becoming eligible late in the recruiting process. Boasting physicality and acute knowledge of wide receiver runs, he will assist in a secondary that allowed 27.9 points last season – 63rd in the FBS.
During head coach Frank Wilson’s first year as Roadrunner head coach, UTSA made their first bowl appearance in program history, falling to New Mexico in a spirited 23-20 defeat at the New Mexico Bowl. Following that accomplishment, UTSA has compiled the best class in their six-year existence, and could be in line for a run for a championship in their seventh season.
