For the first time in school history, the UTSA Roadrunners earned their first bowl win, beating Marshall 35-17 on Tuesday. Rusk graduate Own McCown—and son of NFL journeyman Josh McCown— led the Runners in the absence of seven-year San Antonio stalwart (and Samuel Clemens grad) Frank Harris; the redshirt freshman completed 22 of 31 passes for 251 yards and two touchdowns.
The Roadrunners finished the season 9-4 overall, capping off another winning season by hoisting the 2023 Scooter’s Coffee Frisco Bowl.
On a night with both Harris sitting and senior Rashad Wisdom (Converse Judson) injured early, coach Jeff Traylor needed his squad to be perfect in their leaders’ absence. He got that and more. Dekaney standout receiver Joshua Cephus was named player of the game, making seven catches for 102 yards and a score.
Harris, wearing a blue hoodie under his uniform, was always the first to cheer on his teammates as they came off the field. The long-term Roadrunner ends his collegiate playing career boasting 38 school records and stands alone as the greatest player in Roadrunners history.
Finally, UTSA won a bowl game for the first time in five tries, including consecutive setbacks the past three years, and it was mostly thanks to local born and raised talent; an estimated 89 athletes on the team’s active roster competed in Texas high school football.
