Waco Midway will try to accomplish something Thursday it has not attempted since 2013 – rebound from a district loss.
The perennial state power Panthers saw their 38-game district winning streak snapped last week after surging Harker Heights, which is coming off a 1-9 season, upset them 17-14 at home.
Midway’s last district loss came against Killeen Shoemaker on Oct. 25, 2013. The Grey Wolves won 7-3.
Now, the Panthers (4-3, 4-1 District 12-6A) will attempt to bounce back against the same team as they travel to play Shoemaker at Leo Buckley Stadium, where another benchmark will be on the line.
Midway has not lost a district game on the road since 2007, when they suffered a 35-31 loss at Waco University as a Class 4A program.
The run could be in jeopardy, though.
The Grey Wolves (5-2, 4-1) have won four consecutive games after losing the district opener to Temple (6-1, 5-0), positioning them to potentially make their first playoff appearance since 2015 after going 2-28 during the previous three years.
The Panthers made the postseason every year since 2006, including a pair of trips to the state championship.
