Wakeland Defense Leads the Way in Win over Independence

Wakeland Wolverines

The Wakeland Wolverines continued their impressive season with a 49-0 win over Frisco Independence at The Ford Center Thursday night.

Wakeland Wolverines

As always, the Wolverines were paced offensively by senior running back Jared White. White rushed for 166 yards and two touchdowns and also caught a touchdown.

QB Brennan Myer threw three touchdown passes, including an incredible circus catch by senior Noah Mangum.

The story of the game was the Wakeland defense. The linebacking crew of Alex Shirley, Michael Flanagan, Garrett Maynard, and Barrett Kennedy shut down the Independence offense early and often.

The Knights gained just 54 yards of total offense in the first half.

The Wolverine D set the tone early with a nice interception by senior safety Davion Woolen on the Knights’ first offensive series.

The entire Wakeland secondary, led by starters Woolen, his brother Donavan Woolen, Colin Peek, and Noah Mangum held the Knights to 33 yards passing for the game.

Independence quarterbacks Ryan Rapp and Aidan McCowan were under pressure all night.

The Wolverine defensive line rotation, led by seniors Josh Howe, Jaewon Lee, Burak Centikaya, Gage Autry, Carson McMillan, and junior Josh Brady applied that pressure. Wakeland had 7 tackles for loss, and two of those were by Lee.

Wakeland allowed 135 total yards and only seven first downs, most of that late in the blowout.

Big Win

The win for Wakeland sets up a big matchup next week with Frisco Lone Star. The Wolverines are now 4-1 in district play, with the only loss coming to Denton Ryan, the number one team in the state.

Lone Star is 3-0 in the district, and their only loss is a non-district loss to Aledo, ranked number one in 5A-Division 2. The outcome of that game will go a long way in determining playoff positioning.

The loss puts the Knights in a tough spot as they will likely have to win out in order to have a shot at the playoffs. They take on Frisco Centennial next Friday.
