Wakeland Forces Five Turnovers In Win Over Frisco Reedy
The Wakeland Wolverines, led by a defensive effort that forced five turnovers, solidified their playoff positioning with a 35-28 win over Frisco Reedy on Friday night.
Wakeland Wins With Defense
Reedy got off to a quick start, as Rice commit QB AJ Padgett, hit AJ Jayroe with a 46-yard pass to start the game. The Wolverine defense, however, was able to minimize the damage and held Reedy to a field goal.
Wakeland punted on their first series, and Reedy drove the ball effectively until Padgett was intercepted by Wolverine safety Davion Woolen. This led to a 54-yard drive for Wakeland, capped off by a Jared White touchdown run.
The Wakeland defense stepped up again on the next series, as linebacker Michael Flanagan picked off Padgett. The offense was unable to capitalize again, and the score remained 7-3 midway through the second quarter.
The next Reedy drive ended in another Flanagan interception, and this time the senior linebacker took care of business himself as he ran it back thirty yards for a touchdown.
The Lions turned it over on their next drive, as a Jayroe fumble led to a Wakeland recovery. The Wolverine offense took advantage this time, as White scored again from 5 yards out. Reedy added a late field goal for a 21-6 halftime deficit.
The Wakeland Defense was Tested in the 2nd Half
The second half saw Wakeland extend their lead, with a touchdown pass from Brennan Myer to Woolen. It’s the second time this season that Woolen has had an interception and a receiving touchdown in the same game.
Reedy did make it interesting in the third quarter, as Padgett threw touchdown passes to Jayroe, Erik Barr, and Kaleb Smith, but the Wolverines held on after another touchdown run from White.
He finished with 123 yards on the ground and three touchdowns. Padgett finished with 351 yards and 3 touchdowns, but also three interceptions.
Next Up…
The Wolverines (6-2, 5-2) finish the regular season next week against Denton, then have a bye week before starting the playoffs. Reedy (3-5, 3-3) finish their season with Frisco Centennial and The Colony, as they battle for the final playoff spot in the district.
