5A Team of the Week: Liberty Hill Panthers
If you like offense, Liberty Hill was the place to be on Friday night.
The Panthers and Hutto played one of the games of the season, finishing with a box score that looked straight out of a video game as Liberty Hill outlasted the Hippos 82-80 in a game that won’t be soon forgotten.
However, the two teams went about Friday night in entirely different ways. Hutto relied on Texas Tech commit quarterback Will Hammond who threw for 719 yards, not a typo, and four touchdowns. He also added another six touchdowns on the ground.
But Liberty Hill’s slot-T offense proved too tough for the Hippos to slow down. Fullback Ben Carter rushed for 394 yards and four touchdowns on the night, while running back Noah Long added 310 yards and another five touchdowns. The Panthers threw just one pass. It fell incomplete.
Hutto actually jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but touchdowns by running backs Joe Pitchford and Long and a field goal gave the Panthers a 16-7 advantage at the end of the first quarter that they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the night.
The Panthers led by three possessions for a good portion of the second half, but back-to-back Hutto touchdowns cut the Liberty Hill lead to just 75-73 with six minutes remaining. Unfazed, the Panthers found the response they needed as Jaxson Hines ended up scoring the game-winning touchdown on a four-yard run with just over two minutes remaining.
