5A  Team of the Week: Melissa Cardinals

If there was any doubt over Melissa receiving the top ranking in 5A Division II heading into the season, it should be erased now.

The Cardinals dominated the #3 Argyle Eagles 50-14 to open up their new stadium on Friday night.

Melissa leaned on its run game to power it to victory. Nathan Adejokun finished with 231 rushing yards and a score, while DK Abrams had three short-yardage rushing touchdowns.

But while the Cardinals dominated on the ground, arguably the play of the night came in the passing game. Receiver Lincoln Dunn took a simple dump-off pass from quarterback Trevor Ham and snaked through Argyle defenders for a 46-yard score.

Don’t be surprised if these teams face each other again deep in the playoffs this fall. However, for now, the Cardinals schedule isn’t getting any easier as they travel to take on defending 4A Division I defending state champion China Spring this Friday.
