2A Team of the Week: Stinnett West Texas Comanches
It had been a rough couple of seasons for Stinnett West Texas. After a winless year in 2021, the Comanches finished 3-7 last season while scoring just 111 points.
But that seems a far cry from the 2023 Comanches.
A week after securing its first district win since 2020, the West Texas offense showed the progress it has been making in a 58-54 shootout win at Amarillo Highland Park last Friday.
Quarterback Keaton Fellers completed four passes for 119 yards and a score, but did the majority of his damage on the ground with 137 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Running back Kade Hamby led the backfield with 142 rushing yards, while Kelby Sherwood did plenty of heavy lifting with 66 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries.
With two wins to start district play, West Texas is sitting in a great position to potentially clinch its first playoff berth since 2020. It’s a testament to the work head coach Jeff Smith and his players have put in during his first year at the helm.
West Texas will be back at home this Friday, but the Comanches will be in for quite the test as they welcome 6-1 Panhandle to town.
