2A Team of the Week: Sunray Bobcats
Canadian has been one of the most dominant teams in 3A Division II since the Wildcats moved up in 2016. That didn’t strike an ounce of fear into the Sunray Bobcats.
Sunray quarterback Armando Lujan threw for 160 yards and two touchdowns and Bobcat running back Arnold Mendoza added 101 yards and another two touchdowns on the ground as Sunray scored a notable 30-20 win over Canadian last Friday.
However, while the Bobcat backfield proved tough for Canadian to slow down, it was the defense that stole the show. They picked off the Wildcats six times in the victory and pitched a shutout in the second half.
That performance allowed a rushing touchdown from Mendoza and a passing score from Lujan to Kolten Simmons to turn a 20-17 halftime deficit into the 30-20 win.

It’s yet another monumental victory for a Sunray program that made the state semifinals in 2023. They look to be among the top squads in 2A Division II again this year. They’ll have a bye this Friday before they begin district play on October 11 with a trip to face Spearman.
